After spending 4 hours working on these things, i can now guess with reasonable accuracy which headlight will deploy and retract and to which degree it will do so, the rest of which must be done by hand. It is not the motors, they work fine, its the arms connected to the motor and the headight itself, and thanks to GM's thoughtful bolt placement, I need to take the entire front clip off to access them. But i still look like a shnook whenever i got put the headlights up.

Actually it isnt as bad on a newer one I had to replace one of my gears in the motor and it wasnt very hard at all. However the bolt placement could have been better I agree, but I didnt have to take off the front clip.

my headlights on my 82 TA lasted longer than the car did. Granted I did not own the car since 82, fact of the matter is I never had to deal with them for the years i had it. my 97 TA on the other hand, mandatory replacement for all of it, but not difficult at all, no front clip removal, just headlight and assembly and motor which can be done seperately.

Pop-up headlights suck.
