I'm getting new tires this summer- my current ones are damn near bald. Any recommendations on a set of tires for a decent price? I think my current tires are 235/50/16.

I've got 245/50/16 Dayton Daytonas from Steves Tire on main street on beach side. I really like them and they hook good for street tires. They've lasted a long time for me, I've had them for over 2 years with a shit load of tread still on them. Granted I don't do burnouts on them either. I'd recommend them to anyone. I think I payed 300 for two. Also, make sure you have your alignment checked once you get tires to ensure even ware.

Discounttiredirect doesn't work at all for me. The site's there, but every search is coming up with errors.

Trust me, tire rack is all you need, they are the cheapest around with pretty much the widest selection you can possibly imagine.

Kumho 712's are the biggest peices of shit on earth. Anything with Kumho on it sucks except their competition tires. They are cheap for a reason. They fall apart and wear unevenly. I see it all day long at work.

JoeThat is because Discount's prices are about 45 dollars per tire more, which includes shipping, mounting, and balancing. When you work it out they are more expensive, by quite a bit actually. Get them shipped to your door and then go to a tire store and get them mounted and balanced they usually only charge about 10-15 a tire.

Oh and Kumhos are great, good tires, good wear, and good grip ecspecially for the money, I'm on my second set, and Jon swears by 712s for grip and money. I bought 711s you can't beat $76 a tire from tire rack, ecspecially not with a treadwear rating of 280.

I dunno, sold the car long before they were gone. However they should last a good while, ecspecially considering the price i paid for them.

I was a little off on tire size- I've got 225/50/16's. BFGoodrich g-Force Sport tire seems like a good deal- ZR rated, $86 a tire.

Nick
You sure about that?? 712's have been the spec autocross street tire since they came out until the new falken compound came out a while back. The 711 are not known for their grip but have long life, perhaps you’re thinking of the normal h rated passenger tires. oh well 4 years on 712's three seasons of racing and no uneven wear let alone falling apart

On the other hand, the 712's are only $70. Any idea on the life of them?

well lets see I average about 15-25k out of a set with between 6-8 track events as well

I'd say expect a max of 25 and you will be happy; they are very sticky for a street tire so don't expect incredible mileage.

far as auto-X and tires, Jon is "the man in the know"...got 4 711's coming my way for the beehive, they will be replacing the SportContact that came on it. Those where prety damn good, and the 711's are rated hire than those...this is gonna be alot of fun!

Everyone complains about Continental tires. I like them, and they can't be bad they are standard on MB and BMW.

no I didn't complain about them at all....I said I liked them, but apparantly the 711 have hire ratings...and they where cheaper too...so we'll see! if they had been in my price range I'd run them again!

Maybe you have gotten good sets, Jon. But I've seen them come in all fallin' apart. Korena tire and peices of total shit. I would never buy them and I'd rather have fuckin' Douglas Wal Mart Specials on my car. Usually every other day we have a set of 712s that come in that are separated big bubbles in the sidewalls, worn all kinda which ways. You speak from the autocross side, I speak from the every single day having to deal with these huge peice of shit tires.

If you want to have some other people talk about their driving experiences with Kumho ask: Eric, Will, Patrick1, Kenney, JT and Julie. Of the ones that have had to replace their Kumho's I think every one has bought another set of kumho's.

Thanks cool man. I'm not knockin' you. Just saying I see them every other day. The manager of the shop had bought two cars with Kumho's on them, and guess what? They're on the used tire rack. Now he has Dunlop FM Sport 901s. They're nice, and never once have we had them come back. And hey, if you all want some Kumho's, we've got a used set with 3800 miles on them for I think 170 plus tax and mounting. But shit, I'll mount them for you all for free. Let me know. Oh yeah.. They are 245/45/17's I believe.

Damn Nick...wrong tire size. I'll be getting the tires before I make the 800 mile trip back to Florida, though. The ones I have now have no tread and cracks starting to show...I don't think they'd make it. Tirerack.com does have alot of good deals though...I'm afraid my dad's just gonna buy a cheap set of tires under my nose.

What kinda tires you looking for man? A performance tire, or a nice riding tire? I can get you the hook up at my work. Usually what we do is get the tires at like 5 bucks over our cost, and you walk out with them. Then come back the next day and I will mount them up for you for free. That way you don't have to pay any bull shit mounting/balancing charges.

Nick

But like I just said, I've got to get the tires while I'm home- I won't make the 800 mile trek to Florida. Appreciate the offer though.

There's the side of me that wants a (cheaper) performance tire, but I want them to last until we sell the car, which should be within a year. I put about 25k on my car a year.

when I bought tires for the GN, the total price from www.discounttiredirect.com was cheaper than tire rack. I dont pay to mount and balence my tires, I just wanted to get them to my house.

When you buy tires online, you dont pay for mounting and balencing.

let me get this straight, if you buy only tires from either tirerack or discount tires you will have to pay to have them mounted and balanced at a local shop? This is what I originally thought but some of the posts are making me question this.

Ponyperformance6
07-09-2004, 5:53 PM
Yes that is true, they ship them to you and then you have to take them somewhere to get them mounted.

Uhhhh.. LOL No they don't. lmao. I never paid for mounting and balancing for my Drag Radials. I payed 144 each and that was it. They DID try to make me pay for valve stems, but I took them off. Never did tires.com ever attempt to make me pay for mounting or balancing.

WillWell no shit. Unless you want them to sit in your living room for a decoration, you have to pay for someone to mount and balance them. They don't make you pay for it when you buy the tires, then make you take them to a Discount Tire Company store.

Nick
Actually, the price is factored into the price of the tire along with the shipping costs.
Why else do you think their prices are higher than they are on Tire Rack ? They make you pay for it all right, nothing in life or business is free. I was simply trying to answer his question, and just because they don't charge you extra at the store to get the tires mounted doesn't mean they don't charge you at all.

Discount tire may not charge you at the store, but they do charge you; if you order off of tire rack you may go to wherever you like to get them mounted for a nominal fee.

For Refernce's Sake:

Tires.com price (Kumho Ecsta Supra 712): $106
Tirerack.com (Kumho Ecsta Supra 712): $93
Both sizes 245/45-ZR17

How was I an Asshole? They had THEY cheapest prices on Drag Radials anywhere and when I saw free shipping, they were ordered. I don't see how you say they are so much more expensive when I researched prices and shipping, and tires.com came out the cheapest by far. Sorry if I came off as an asshole. Didn't mean to.

Ok, for shits... BFG Comp T/A G-Force KD's 245/45/17's.. From Tire Rack, 204 bucks, PLUS 16.85 for shipping. From tires.com? 214.01 with FREE shipping. Dunno... But that sounds cheaper to me... What about you? Ok, let's see if this tread continues... Pirelli P-Zero's... 275/40/17's... From tirerack.com? 148.00 + 16.85 shipping. From tires.com? 159.00 FREE shipping. I'm thinking I'm right, and you're wrong. Sure... I found a couple exception where tirerack was 1-2 dollars cheaper... But far and beyond tires.com was way cheaper.

Ahh they just don't carry BFG Drags in the size i was looking for them at, my bad.

Anyways, my shipping costs from tire rack did not qualify the adjusted price on tires.com. I still saved money, shipping costs to my house were about 40-45 (if memory serves). Now the prices are close, but still a little less, and tire rack tends to have a much larger selection.

Anyways, overall it is basically a push either way you do it, last time i looked at discount tires i was under the impression they were much higher, maybe they brought their prices down, which is good business. Either way, it is a push, but when tires.com says free shipping that isn't true, they are just adjusting the prices in order to cover thier costs.

Bottom line, we are both right, and we are both wrong. Leave it at that, back to the topic at hand. Let me know what you decide to do Jeff.
