Hey guys,

im doing a report for english....comparing a ford engine to a chevy engine (and MAYBE chrysler (mopar??))....looking at prolly just comparing 350 to 302...looking at which one is better to start w/...track records (breakdowns and such), more bang for your buck...that kinda stuff, keep the biased opinions out of it, but does anyone have any thoughts/ideas/research that could help me out? Thanks....

302's always have been more responsive to mods, they can be made really fast, just like a 350 (even if the 350 comes with more cubes)...it's really difficult to tell which is better without a bias opinion really. Both are excellent motors to play with, and you can keap a resonable budget and be quite fast with both....

food for thoughts

thats still apples to oranges... need to compare motors of sililar size...

like a 351 windsor vs a 350 small block

or chevy 427 vs the ford 429 vs 440 hemi (i think the weer hemi's)

I dont know much history about the motors themselves, but comparisons like this would be more fair i think.

That thread was suppose to be posted in the technical section.

426 was the Hemi, 440 Commando was the 6 pack. Its easy to get them confused, that would be a pretty cool match up though since those were the "End all Be All" of the big 3 during the Era.

You should probably compare a 318 Dodge, a 302 Ford, and a 350 chevy, since these are the most commonly used engines from each manufacturer for modification. The best thing to do would be to get a Jeg's or Summit Catalog, and compare prices for each item on the same engine. Pick a simple combination. Compare the same product for each engine. For example, I would compare an Edelbrock Performer RPM set of heads for each engine. The tough part will be finding data on power output for each. Try and keep it simple. Bolt on performance. No bottom end modifications, because it just gets too complicated.

true HP, but a more appropriate measurement would be 302 ford, 318 dodge, and the POS 305 Chevy

just food for thought

no the 305 is out...no one ever uses it for performance....302 350 and 318 are the common ones with the most data out there...hell I think car craft had an article on a bunch of SB engines with the same bolt ons and made a comparison....that would be what you need to use as a start!

might be kinda expensive but you could buy that desktop dyno game and use different configurations and see what happens.

I would think the mopar 383 or 340 would be better to use than the 318.

2002GTBlue - You show your lack of automotive knowledge by your post. The 305 Chevy motor was used as the economical alternative to the true work horse 350.

But yes, it WAS a POS.

The lasted issue of Car Craft has a nice comparison of the SBC 350, Ford 351W and Mopar 360. Basically, the goal was to build a street engine on a budget of 2500 bucks. Has all the specs, prices as well as dyno numbers. Might be something to check out.

Now if you wanted to get real creative you could do the Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick 455's each was different, the Buick is the strongest though. [/b]

She could, but does it really apply. Who modifies old 455s these days.

I think thats the ticket... similar sized motors from the big three with an acceptable motor mod budget. and to see which block had more bang for the wrench head buck...

Yeah, but where are you going to get up to date data on that sort of build up? Let's face it, there isn't anything you can't do with a new small block that you could do with those old big blocks. The market is just set up for more advanced engines now.
