How many trannies out there that will handle 800ish tq come with no bellhousing? I just need an input shaft sticking out and a flange. I THINK ive seen turbo 400s without a bellshousing, but maybe im crazy. Im gonna have to make my own BH, but thats cool. I just need a donor and dont wanna hack up one with a bellhousing, thats not very repeatable or servicable IMO. I may just make a BH frame and use a shattershield, though ill prob end up sheet-metaling it. Lemme know whats out there, im not an automatic man.
Thanks.
No lenco's either. :D

Turbo 400, and call Advance Adapters. You can mount anything to anything

A T/H 400 is one piece tranny and bellhousing from GM. You can get a race version from various tranny builders with an aftermarket case that doesn't have a bellhousing. You can also get a powerglide the same way.

There you go again, speaking out of place. you can take a stock gm case and cut the bell off of it and then use the front pump housing bolts to hold any thing you want.Just like I have a sfi JW Ultra bell On my stock gm case 400 turbo trans out of an olds.

though i'd LOVE to just hack up a bellhousing (i know i can go get another one at the junk yard) i wanted to (read above) avoid that as much as possible. Repeatability and non-ghettoness are both big factors, as these will not be one offs. I am probably going to be building a lot of these bellhousing/adapter assemblies, so merely cutting one up isnt a viable option UNLESS they have some freakishly conveinient flat at the end of the input shaft.
I cannot simply adapt, as the depth would make me have to get a custom input shaft made im guessing. I dont want this. Again, repeatability because others will be using it.
Dennis, is there any way you can get a picture of what you are talking about? When you say front pump bolts.. what are they for initially? It sounds like a good idea, maybe i can exploit that!
I cant use a glide, that would probably bump me up into some wierd pro class if i ever run at a sactioned event.
I have seen the bellhousing-less TH400s, but i cant remember where. A company name or link would be much appreciated.
Thanks guys!

It kinda sounds hack, but by no means is it. The company name is JW Performance, they are here in rockledge,fl. They have a thick cast aluminum bell housing that attaches to the front pump on the transmission ( th350,400,glide,ford c4,c6,and so on) The factory pump housing has a few bolts holding it to the case, like 8 to 12 bolts not sure on how many but enough of them. The might be able to cast up something for you, but maybe not. Search around to see if you can come up with any pics.

I know who JW is, i just wanted to know how that adapter worked. I think ive got a better ide, i googled a few things. How did you cut your bellhousing down? Im probably going to have to make my own bellhousing, im not much into trialing some one-off casting. I can get the flange CNCd here. The bellhousing my my stock transmissiong comes off with bolts, perhaps i can make a plate to get that to fit. Ill probably just tig something up. If you can get me pics you would rock. :D Thanks/

I had them cut mine down, but it can easily be done with a sawzall and a die grinder to clean it up. Sorry no pics for ya.

Why would running a powerglide put you in any different class than running a th400 in the car?

A friend of mine ran a 8.8 diff in his miata at an import drag event. They protested him right out of there, DQ'd on the spot for running "domestic" parts. I think glide or 400, you are still going to have problems.

nah, supras run 400s all day long. Hardly noone uses glides or anything else because of what i said. Im not an NHRA rulebook afficianado, i just read that. However, most of them have the trans sent to boostlogic to make it a "BL400" with the custom bellhousing, but not all, so i dunno if thats a loophole or not. Plus, i wont have enough torque for a glide i think.
EITHER WAY, im pretty set on a 400 anyway. ANother dumb question, whats a good built 5 or 6 speed for comparison? Im gonna work on the autos first but im sure ill be puttin a few manuals in as well. Will a t56 hold a buttload of power? I hope. :naughty:

I'm not talking out of place, I'm merely mentioning the better option. I'm well aware of tranny hacking.
