Can any of you recommend a good machine shop you have personal experience with? I am picking up a motorset in the next few days and would like to have a shop tear it down and inspect it for wear. They must be competent enough where I can drop off the factory FSM and then be able to follow it to check the tolerances.

We use Fast Track Machine up off Mason Ave. There is a place in DeLand if you want to go over there they are real good. Talk to Dennis at Action to get the name of the DeLand shop cause I forget.

Well, Fred's Fastrac used to be a possibility, but lately they have given me doubt about their abilities with modern DOHC 4-cyl cars. Most recently, a guy in SCIC brought his SR20DET there to have them check the crank for roundness and had it turned. Also had them inspect the main and rod bearings due to a knocking sound coming from the motor. They turned the crank and said everything was good to go. Next day, 2500 rpms...rod knock. So far a guy named Kevin at Deland Auto Parts has been recommended to me as well as a place called P.C.C. Auto in Kissimmee.
Try Express Engines in Deland.

freds fastrac has been GREAT to me. I wouldnt put one sr20 past them because the installer might have not been as competant as he thought. Express in deland is also good, but its in deland. I think they are a bit more $ too.
PS a 4cyl DOHC car is still a motor and it works the same. If you think your block is picky youve not worked with a 6g72 before. :D Fred did a great job with my DOHC V6 mitsu block. cant get much more bitchy than that.

I need head work too and was referring more towards a DOHC hydraulic lifter system rather than a V8 pushrod.
I'll check Fred's out again. Don't get me wrong, they did a pretty good job on my friend's 2.3L stroker on his 4G63.
EDIT: Turns out his "rod knock" was the sound from not installing the spacer plate between the block and tranny so all is well. They cleaned and resurfaced some heads that I had before and those turned out okay. I mean, my motor is pretty ancient compared to what's out there today so they shouldn't have a problem.

Yes that's it Express in Deland. But I'd try Fast Track to stay in town.

Yes, I realize that. But FYI, it's not a DSM motor I would be bringing them.

LOL, well, I don't need for them to inspect for wear, I just need them to do the work now. I pulled apart the bottom end today and was greeted with this...
Hmm...it has holes in it....

What? Metal shavings aren't a good lubricant?

Journals don't LOOK bad, but it's hard to see and feel wear on them...

Yeah, I am going to take it down to Fred's some time this week and have them measure it anyway to see if it can be turned. I mean, it doesn't matter as a crank isn't much more than the machining. I think Fred's quoted me $85 to have it machined and a crank from Advance is $190.

notice the last picture, where there is supposed to be an oil groove like the other 3 mains.
The week previous, this car beat an 04 GTO at the 1/4 mile. 200k on the clock! (aka, the above damage didnt happen all-0f-a-sudden.

Well, I found a guy up in Palatka (of all places). Well, he found me actually when I posted about my issue on a local message board. He thinks the crank is okay as the bearings never spun, nor were the caps overheated. Of course, he won't know for sure until he can get a micrometer on it. But anyway, I don't know if he felt bad for me or what but these are the prices he gave me on the repair--
crankshaft grinding and micropolishing - $45
main bearings - $28
rod bearings - $18
piston rings - $53
full gasket set (including head gasket) - $90
Acidwash cleansing, cylinder honing, and assembly - a case of beer
So a little less than $250 out the door to get the bottom end ready to roll again.

Just be glad you guys don't have trucks as your toys. This just happened to me this weekend. Backed up off a trail, pulled forward and then it sounded like I hit a tree. Thats what my buddy said standing 300 yds away. Goddamn sand dunes.
