I got an offer from Heico Aerospace. Don't know if I should take it, or hold out for something better. It's in Hollywood, FL. Basically they are the AutoZone of the aircraft parts world. The job is basically going to be the "people person" from office space. What do you guys think?

gouldie

so do you physically take the specs from the customer and bring them to the engineers?

EKO
06-06-2007, 4:27 PM
Well no, my secretary would do that.

Yeah, all these questions - and did they offer you the money you are looking for?

Don't forget that job satisfaction is important too. All the money in the world won't make up for a job that you hate doing every day. It will pay for cool toys, but it might suck the life out of you.

Corporate America is all the same. If the money is good, the job isn't a nightmare, then take it. You gotta start somewhere. Job satisfaction and Corporate America don't go together, don't be fooled, because at the end of the day, you work "for" someone else for "their" project. Find out what the job is all about, get some details, decide then.

Don't be fooled, You can still enjoy and take pride in what you do even if you are working "for" someone else.

Definately get more info, but you don't have to take the first thing offered. True- you gotta start somewhere but, just because it isn't a nightmare doesn't mean you should take it.

Don't screw around with me Eric. You're a hell of an instinctive Engineer. Maybe too good. I'd like to bust your butt but I can't. I got another problem here. I gotta send somebody from this college to Miramar. I gotta do something here - you two characters are going to Top Parts.

I'm necro'ing this one.

So lets hypothetically say you hypothetically got a yob offer from Boeing for a yob you would hypothetically like better for $3,000 less/yr. What do you hypothetically do?

So stay where you are or go somewhere you want to be for less? I guess I would base than on how much I liked (or hated) my current job and whan kind of job security I had.

EKO
01-09-2008, 10:15 PM
I asked if salary was negotiable. I don't really like my current job, but I can deal with it. As far as job security, I'm golden where I am, and there's definitely places to go. Plus I'm in Miami.

THIS (http://www.pacificraceways.com/) looks tempting as all hell, though! (See Road Racing > Road Course Info > Mouse over turn numbers)

Been there, nice track

so you live in Miami, where it's expensive, and they are offering you a position in Everett for 3000 less a year...hmmmm ARE THEY ON FUCKING CRACK? Seattle is as expensive as Miami! Plus it's fucking cold there ALL THE TIME...oh and last year we had 19 days of sunshine...trust me, if you are used to the sun, then you don't want to go there...shoot I mean look at the weather report for the track! feels like 35 and raining...yeah nice! I know I was miserable there, constant shity weather, constant cold, people are kinda weird there too -and they can't drive either- takes you for ever to go anywhere (20 miles in 1.5h).
Ok in all fairness, when it is nice out during the summer, it's probably the most beautifull place...WHEN is the key word here...oh and Snowboarding/Skiing is nice (2h away, 3 place to choose from), and I love skiing, but I wouldn't ever exchange that for 360 sunny days! (you can fly out and go skiing for a week instead then come back to palm trees!)

my 0.02 $ :)

EKO
01-10-2008, 10:49 AM
If they offer me significantly more, I think I would go. They handle (not pay just for, but send their people to do) everything as far as moving goes, and it's a union job. Plus I get to do actual engineering work.

Brazen6.0
01-10-2008, 11:22 AM
Well, all I'm saying is be prepared for the weather, that was my biggest complaint ever. If that place was sunny most of the year, it would be kick ass, but it is not.

What program? Union scares me, you can't get anything done on time with them involved (hence why there isn't one here in SC :) )

Company doing the move is standard, Labinal moved me at no cost to me...it's prety sweet! don't have to pack, don't have to lift boxes thru the stairs...just sit there drinking a beer and tell them where you want your stuff :)

Not knowing what you make (and I don't need to know), I would say if you can live comfortably in Miami with what you make, then Seattle should be ok too. Your best salary increase will be when ever you change company...so I'd hit them for at least 10k more, that'll cover the shity raise you get later -if any, and I mean you might not even get inflation compensation of 3%
If you think you are "tight" right now living in Miami, then Seattle is not for you unless you get a significant increase in pay (3k ain't it)...

The job is Industrial Engineer for the 737 program in Renton. I'd be working with the techs doing the assembly on the wings and final assembly to help improve their efficiency. They said I'd be on the shop floor about 90% of the time (bonus).

I'm not as comfortable as I'd like to be in Miami (not enough money for car parts), but I don't have any problems getting by. I was going to ask for 6-8k more plus a 3k signing bonus to cover the relocation money I will owe HEICO if I leave. I would think they would laugh in my face if I asked for 10k more. I was looking into housing in Renton, and I can get a nicer house (2 car garage) for 100-200 less/month than I am paying now.

Ah Renton, yeah cheaper rent, but housing to buy is still up there...that similar position here with Vought as contract pays 100k a year with benefits and 401k. I wouldn't take 52k. 60k at a minimum, it's still Seattle, even if you are in Renton, when you go out, it's seattle prices. (see pm for more details)

Well since I think I'm going to take the Spirit yob, I'm now presented with a problem. Have someone drive my 2 door, 2wd, rusted out POS yeep out there, or sell it (i have a buyer) and try to find something out there. Only problem is I can't find anything since the midwest is mostly uninhabited. I don't want to spend more than 3k since I'm going to be putting a down payment on a house. WWJD?

EKO
01-21-2008, 9:57 AM
They give me a lump sum of $7500, of which $3000 goes directly to HEICO without passing go. I'll be driving the mega Penske pulling the Camaro, and Nick is going to be driving the STI. The yeep isn't really worth shipping. I think I'm going to sell it and be a pedestrian for a while.

On a side note, current weather - today: snow, high 39, tmw: sunny, high 20 something. No heat in the yeep. The heater valve was bypassed when I bought it and I didn't ask questions.
