View Full Version : Poll question: 2-ways

Anyone else keen on getting 2-way radios for our road trips? I wouldn't mind it just in case a car starts acting up, or if we need to make an unscheduled stop or just if we get separated by lights.
They're anywhere from $20-100 at bestbuy. If people were into it, it would be cool if we could all get the same setup so it's compatiable. (leaning towards a setup on the $20 side.)
If you already have one...say what make/model in your reply.
Thanks,
Jeremy
It's something we should look into. It probably would've helped quite a bit the other day, especially when Eddie randomly decided to stop for gas after everyone else already did 10 minutes before.

Eddie has a terrible habit of doing that. What happened to Eddie's 2 way radios.

I bought two pairs of a small radioshack product, there's no model code but its the "14 Channel Personal FRS 2-Way Radio". Good thing about it is since it works off of the Family Radio Service, you can buy more radios that work off the same freqs if you need them. I think it was about $25 for a pair.
I bought them for my road trips, and talking between the jet/the squadron/base ops/the local booze shop when I'm on a deployment (since we can come up on those same freqs on one of the jet's radios  . The only thing is the range is just under a mile when you're talking on it inside a car. You're not going to find anything much better than that though.
Ops tested Ok, highly recommended.

They've got the 5-mile versions at RadioShack for about $80 a pair. Kinda pricey, but they're top quality.

Get the ones that use the entire CB band, that way you can use them with everyone.

It doesn't matter what kinda radio u got, if they are all on the same channel then they will all work togther.

I can attest that does NOT work... Me and Graham (123Cya) have purchased a pair of 5 mile walkie talkies before i forget what brand... and tried them with some guys with the motorolas... on the exact same channel, subchannel setup... it did not work.

it depends on what brand you get, cobra channel 14 i think it is matches with either motorola 7 or 9. The most used by far is the motorola, the other thing is that most people don't have the sub channels, if I where to go back and do it over I'd get them with the sub channels for paint ball, but other wise I don't have any need for a mroe secure channel set up.

Get handheld CBs, then they do match channels.

If you guys are gonna get a set, even if just for a few cars as a club thing I'd recommend you get the Motorola's.
There the industry standard for handheld comm and they have way way better sound filtering then a cheaper brand. This may not sound like its worth the extra cash, but considering how loud some of your cabins might be on the highway, or if your in a convertable you'll want to be able to understand what the hell the other guys saying and vice versa.
Bought a set cause I was tired of loosing people who dont know that when you follow somebody you want to stay reletively close to them, not 3 miles behind them on a City Highway full of traffic.

I've seen your idea of close, I think the radios were definately a good investment for you.

I got some at home, I be up there this weekend and i'll bring them back with me. It's a good idea, i couldn't stop to get gas when we went to midnight drags, because I had no idea where we were going, ended up paying $15 for two gaalons of 110 leaded to get me to a gas station (had about 1 half gallon in the tank once we got to OSW).

Why are you putting 110 octane in a 93 Camaro?
